When you are going to charge a lithium battery you have to be very careful and you should follow some safety rules. Should a fire occur while a device is being charged, understanding what to do can help keep you and others safe.
Remain Patient and Disconnect the Power Adapter
Don’t Panic If your lithium battery does catch fire, the first reaction should be to keep a cool head. Panicking will only exacerbate the situation. Then, immediately unplug the charger from the wall. This helps prevent the fire from growing.
Transport the Burning Battery to a Non-Dangerous Area
So when you unplug the charger, carefully transport the smoldering lithium automotive battery to an area where nothing will catch fire. This might be a concrete floor or metal table. Be cautious, and try to find gloves if you can to protect your hands.
Do Not Use Water
Do not attempt to extinguish the fire with water. Water can exacerbate the fire due to the lithium in the car battery. Allow the fire to die a natural death. “Do not blow the fire, this would encourage it to spread.
Clear Everyone and Call for Help
After moving the burning battery into a safe place, clear everyone away from the scene fast. This allows everyone to be safe and away from the smoke and fire. Once away, call for help. Let them know where you are and what happened.
Stay Away from Smoke
Do not inhale the smoke emanating from the burning lithium car battery while awaiting for help. It can be harmful to you. Keep far away from the fire and if possible, go to an area with fresh air. If you are sick or have any symptoms, get medical help right away.
